The first library in India was the Thiruvananthapuram State Central Library in Kerala, which was established in 1829. The largest library in India is the Calcutta National Library, which was established in 1838.

Allahabad Public Library Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh 1864 There are 1.25 lakh books on different languages. There are also rare collections of Arab manuscripts and various important parliamentary documents.
Smt Hansa Mehta Library Vadodara, Gujarat 1950 A collection of 3500 valuable books of the sixteenth century.
Connemara Public Library Chennai, Tamil Nadu 1896 One of the four national depository libraries. It is also used as a depository library of the United Nations.
